Feed Soundtrack

I chose the song “Ballad of the Dying Man” by Father John Misty. When I was reading Feed, I immediately thought of “Bored in the USA” by Father John Misty, but “Ballad of the Dying Man” seemed to go along really well with the last chapter. After Titus meets Violet, he begins to question the feed but not very seriously. It is only when he sees Violet dying that he really seems to begin to question and rebel against the feed. Titus says on his way to see Violet for the last time, “I had an hour before I had to go meet Quendy” (Anderson 295). In “Ballad of the Dying Man,” Father John Misty sings, “But first checks his news feed to see what he's 'bout to miss.” Like the dying man, Titus is reluctant to let go of his perception of reality. He bounces back in forth between the reality that Violet has introduced to him and the reality that had been presented to him his entire life. However, Titus’ last speech to Violet breaks with the way he had been speaking previously in the novel. Titus appears to have grown more self-aware and disillusioned with the way the world is because of his relationship with Violet.

  1. Hi Monica,

Nice song choice for this ending scene. The line about checking the news feed to see what he'll miss is also evocative of Violet's experience. She cannot check the news feed to find out about everything she cared about, so Titus has to read her the headlines, and there's some tragic irony in illiterate Titus being her last connection to the feed. The tone works well with the tone of the ending scene as well.
