Holden feels that adults attempt to keep up a facade of happiness through small talk, and he feels that all of society is based in surface encounters. There are sections in the book where he partakes in the "phoniness" he is trying to eradicate, such as when he goes to the bar and attempts to order a drink, or when he orders a prostitute to his room, but never follows through with it. He has moments where he becomes the thing he despises so much, and yet he continues to defend his actions. Holden lives a life of luxury and social privilege, but he is ready to throw that all away and run off to the countryside to live with his "deaf and blind wife" so that he can escape the clutches of this "phony" society. He is prepared to leave behind a life that many people would dream of and at no point appreciates the privilege he has. These memes all resonate the fact that Holden thinks there are nothing but phonies when you enter adulthood, but at the same time shame him for tossing away such an opportunity to live a life of high social status and free of financial hardship.

Holden is a young man who is not afraid to put his middle finger up to society and it rules. You can see that when you look at his profile picture, which is literally a middle finger, and when you realize he's flunked out of multiple schools. In spite of that he is still a good guy. He is an advocate against bullying, not just on social media but also in his every day life. He is a sweet and sensitive kid who tries to include everyone and make everyone feel happy. Just like when he decided to invite Ackley to a movie despite the fact that he and his other friend both found Ackley to be quite annoying. Holden is quite interested in women and finds them sexy. He enjoys the sexiness of women but he is easily turned off by them if they lack intelligence. He fancies calling himself a Sapiosexual. Considering that he's flunked out of so many school's that fact should be surprising, but it isn't because he is actually quite bright. He is a wiz at literature and the only thing that really holds him back is his susceptibility to boredom and his inability to persevere through adversity.
