Ms. Marvel represents commons
issues that girls that are 16 have to deal with, such as fitting in and
standing out at the same time. In the beginning of “Fight Song,” Plattern gives
an image of a small boat in the ocean. This is the same feeling that Kamala
faces in the opening of this comic. She is simply just one small person in an
ocean of people; she does not feel as though she is powerful or that she is
making an impact in the world. As the song and the story progresses, a new
found power is discovered that is moving and uplifting. Kamala slowly discovers
that she has superpowers. At first, she is confused about the whole situation that
was imposed on her, but she begins to learn how to use her powers for the
greater good. Once she finds the strength behind her powers, she feels
empowered and slowly loses this insecurity she once had before. For instance,
when she first learns of her powers, Kamala decides to transform into Captain
Marvel. Towards the end of the comic, she accepts herself and chooses to keep
her body the way it is, as Kamala. This shows her acceptance of who she is as a
16-year-old Muslim girl. The line “I don’t really care if nobody else believes”
highlights this moment in the book considering she doesn’t care anymore if
people doubt her ability to fight because she will prove her ability to do so
in whatever body she chooses to occupy. I think this song would be perfect to be playing in the back of any scene in this comic after she discovers her superpowers.
I like how you took the rise of "Fight Song" and applied it to the rise within Ms. Marvel. The transformation of the artists feelings within the song coincide perfectly with those of Kamala.
ReplyDeleteThis was an excellent choice for Kamala. I agree that this would make her feel empowered. I think of the lyrics "This is my fight song, take back my life song, prove I'm alright song" really epitomizes the newfound realization that the strength she needed to be a hero was there the whole time. I'm sure this would have been on her ipod. It makes me think of the quote "She needed a hero so that's what she became."
ReplyDeleteI agree with Shae! This realization is something hidden within herself and she just needed that extra motivation to find it.
DeleteThis is a great choice. Your mentioning of the lyrics that fit her situation is nice.
ReplyDeleteHi Veronica,
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is song is a good fit for Kamala. I could see this song working while she is assembling her super wardrobe, or maybe as the credits roll after the first movie. It speaks to her development from a shy and insecure adolescent girl into a super hero comfortable in her own skin. I would like to see even further analysis of the lyrics to show more connections between Kamala and this song.
