Identity is one of the main issues that sticks out in the comic. Kamala battles with her own self image and her own agency. She, in addition, is battling pressures from her Pakistani, Muslim culture which helps and hinders her job as a superhero. The first meme speaks to the relationship between Kamala and her father. While she knows her parents love her, they want her to succeed on their terms. Some people would think being a hero is a success, but not her parents. Next, the kermit meme describes the excitement and curiosity Kamala has with being a superhero. At first, she doesn’t think that she can do anything. Upon receiving her powers, she gains the confidence to effect change in her community. The third meme reminds us that Kamala is still a young girl, who is a novice at being a superhero. Regardless of her powers, she is still a sixteen year old girl that isn’t always fully aware of the situations she puts herself into. Last gif describes Kamala’s acceptance of herself. She doesn’t need to have fair skin and blonde hair to be a hero. Heros come in all shapes and sizes. When her outward appearance more closely resembles her own, I think Kamala has started accepting herself. She is Ms. Marvel and she “ain’t sorry”.
Your choice of memes is hilarious! Nice job!
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteSeveral of the posts have drawn attention to that moment where she attempts her first rescue and is shot. It is a poignant reminder that she still has all of her adolescent awkwardness even if she has been gifted with powers. My favorite meme is probably the Beyonce one, because I agree that the most important growth moment for Kamala is her realization that she is going to be an unapologetically brown, Muslim Ms. Marvel.
