Esperanza's Insta Game

https://www.instagram.com/esperanzacordero13/?hl=en

Esperanza is a young lady going through an awkward time in life.  I tried to reflect a realistic translation of Esperanza to a modern day young teen.  The blog, or instagram, was meant to highlight a timeline of Esperanza's emotions throughout the novel.  The first post is with her trying on heels, not particularly beautiful heels as it is her first encounter.  With her there is Marin and an additional friend.  The second photo is meant to express her new found understanding of sexuality while still showing a level of insecurity as insecurity is an attribute of young teenagers.  Then I have a picture of heels that Esperanza would like, well I'm not sure if she would like them but I sure do!  Then there is a picture of run down houses in Chicago, with Esperanza expressing her want to leave and "have a house of her own."  Then a photo in reference to self defense because of the sexual assault she suffered, she would then have more of an awareness of defending herself.  Lastly the two photos with family and community reflect her new found importance for caring and protecting the ones she loves.  In addition to making posts, I also subscribed Esperanza to a handful of blogs.  The blogs she follows follow similar themes: vanity, community, escape/travel.  Lastly I included a subscription to a blog that gives tips to writers.  Check it out!

  1. Hey Trent!
I really liked this instagram account for Esperanza! I especially liked how you included the two posts about shoes, considering I believe that they embody her development as a strong female throughout the novel. The captions also seemed spot on for Esperanza and her very blunt, yet sometimes sassy way of speaking.

  2. Hi Trent. I appreciate the way you constructed Esperanza's Instagram. It was interesting to see how you crafted her page because I also chose this prompt! The aesthetic of her Instagram really does seem like what Esperanza would post, and I appreciate the details (like the high heels) that you incorporated.

  3. Hi Trent,

I do not know if this was intentional or not, but all of the images on this instagram have an 80s/90s feel to them, which works authentically with the text. The first heels picture with jeans and socks killed me, but then it is probably an accurate representation of what Esperanza and her neighbors would wear at that age and time period. I'm glad you drew attention to the sexual assault scene as there is a tension throughout the book with the heels (and the sexual maturity they symbolize) and the predatory, patriarchal punishments that come with being sexualized. I appreciate the final image on home and communtiy as well.
