I chose the song “On + Off” by Maggie Rogers to reflect Violet and Titus relationship towards the end of the book. The passage I focused on happens in the hotel when Violet and Titus are during their failed attempt at sex. She tells him that “I really wanted this to happen with you. Right from when we started going out. You’re just so beautiful. You lead this life like I’ve always wanted to — just, everything is normal. We can just be like normal people are, off skiing. We could even rent skis. You know, normal kids, they go off for ski weekends.” For me that highlighted this idea of escape and the hope that she had built on Titus. This song choice is equal parts serious and satirical. Even though it matches Violet’s emotions and mindset, Titus is somewhere else entirely, and I think that just speaks to the sense of detachment evident in every relationship in the story, not just Violet and Titus, the character’s inability to truly connect with one another.
Hello Safeeyah,
ReplyDeleteI like the song choice for this scene, and I think that element of borderline satire and detachment pervades all of the relationships in the novel. No one seems to be truly sincere after the feed. It would help to pull out some of the song lyrics and include them in your response to show why you feel the lyrics, in addition to the tone and sound, of the song mirror the scene from Feed you selected.
