Zombies by Childish Gambino
[Verse 1: Childish Gambino]
All I see is zombies
Walking all around us
You can hear them coming
(They come to take your life)
You can hear them breathing
Breathing down your spine
[Verse 2: Childish Gambino]
All I see is zombies
Hear them screaming at her
They can smell your money
And they want your soul
Here they come behind you
Try to stay alive
[Hook: Kari Faux & Childish Gambino]
We're coming out to get you
We're all so glad we met you
We're eating you for profit
There is no way to stop it
You will find there is no safe place to hide, hide
(That's right, that's right)
[Verse 3: Childish Gambino & Kari Faux]
All I see is zombies feeding all around us
All they eat are people (and you won't survive)
They don't know what happened, they just stay alive
[Hook: Kari Faux & Childish Gambino]
We're coming out to get you
We're all so glad we met you
We're eating you for profit
There is no way to stop it
There is no way to stop it
You will find there is no safe place to hide
(That's right, that's right)
We're coming out to get you
We're all so glad we met you
We're eating you for profit
There is no way to stop it
There is no way to stop it
[Outro: Childish Gambino]
Do you feel alive, yeah?
Do you feel alive, yeah?
Doo-doo, doo-doo-doo
Do you feel alive?
The zombies in this song represent the people with the feed installed in their brain. Unknowingly they have become slaves to it. They don’t know how to act without instant gratification or access to information. They lose the ability to reason for themselves. In the chapter entitled “Lose the Chemise”, Violet explains to Titus the feed collects information about them and uses it to market products to their contemporaries. This process categorizes people and manipulates into fitting a certain profile and into wanting certain products. Violet doesn’t refuses to be influenced: “I’m not going to let them catalog me. I’m going to become invisible” (Anderson 98). Just as the song says, all Violet sees are zombies (those with the feed). The corporations want their money and their soul (individuality). The hook softly exposes the truth in the background: “We’re eating you for profit there is no way to stop it.” Sadly there really is no safe place to hide. The feed and capitalism are two very strong forces.
Hi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics of this song work perfectly with Feed. Actually, scholars read zombies as critiques of rampant consumerism. They both the idea of "mindless" consumerism that you mention here in Feed. When Violet says you start to become more like their advertisements until you've lost some of your identity and individualism because of it. We can also read a connection between the consumption by zombies and the consumerism of capitalism. So, this Zombies song works well on a lot of levels. I would like to have a link in the post so we can hear the song as well.
