House on Mango Street Memes

joker mind loss - Hispanics move in the neighborhood and everyone loses thier minds

Bad Luck Brian - makes fun of dying Aunt it's the last thing she sees

These memes focus on the experiences of the experience of living as a poor Hispanic in the novel. The joker meme encapsulates the reaction that most of the white neighbors have when her family moves to mango street and see this as a sign that the neighborhood is dropping in quality. The troll face refers to when Esperanza goes to see the fortune-teller only for her to tell her that her better home will only come from herself. The success baby meme references the baby that learns English from TV to the dismay of his mother. Finally, the Bad Luck Brian image relates to Esperanza and her friends making fun of her weak and bedridden aunt before she eventually died. All of these memes resonate with scenes focusing on Esperanza and other Hispanic families’ experiences living in poverty in the city. This modern interpretation mimics how minorities on the internet use concise meme to explain their situations and lack of privileges.

  1. I think your memes fit well with the story. I especially love the baby one because it is not focusing on the mom's feelings but makes the baby the narrator. Plus the baby is adorable which makes it even better.

  2. I think your second meme is spot on and fits with the story well. Sounds like the women who Esperanza sees spot on.

  3. Hi Luke,

These memes work well with the scenes you selected. I had a hard time placing the fortune teller one until I read your explanation, but then it made perfect sense. I do wonder if there are some other memes whose tone would better fit the tone of the novel. For example, what about the Morpheus What if I told you? meme, which is often used to call out ignorance or racism. The buzz light year/ Woody meme is also used similarly. The Brian one probably seems the most at odds with the tone of the novel because I do not know that we are being invited to mock Esperanza in quite the same way that we are invited to mock this Brian kid. Nevertheless, you make a good point about non-white cultures using memes to draw attention to microaggressions.
