Esperanza's Instagram Account

I was very specific and purposeful in the all the decisions I made in creating this Instagram account. With the account name, I wanted to include Esperanza’s name, of course, and an adjective to describe her. Although it may seem redundant, since her name translates to hope in English, I think it represents the juxtaposition between her name, its literal meaning, and her own sentiments towards her name and its meaning, which she touches upon in the beginning of the book. I do think she becomes much more hopeful for her own future and for Mango Street itself, in terms of the lessons and opportunities, it can and has provided her with, as the story unfolds. For the bio and the captions of each post, I chose to use actual lines from the book because I feel like her instagram would just be an extension of her writing, like another mode of expression. Instead of writing everything down, she might have otherwise included some of her writing in her posts, as I chose to do for her. I decided to include her location in the first two posts because we are constantly reminded throughout the book of her literal location on Mango Street and the influence it has on Esperanza’s life and the situations she encounters. I did not include it in the last post about hope because she is proclaiming her plans to leave Mango Street, but she does not have a specific location that she wishes to escape to. I created an avatar through BitMoji to look like what I believed she would look like, in correlation to the descriptions of the text.
