The Toy Story meme and the Oprah meme I created had to do
with the notion that about seventy-three percent of the population at the time
of this novel has feeds implanted. The “normal” human is greatly outnumbered
and one would be hard-pressed to find people to talk to who don’t know what it’s
like to have a feed. The second Kermit meme has to do with Violet and her
crusade to break from the feed and not let it get to know her and “trick” it
into thinking she has likes and dislikes contrary to what she sees. She had the
feed implanted at the age of seven, so she has some semblance of how life was
before the feed to go off of. My third Back in My Day meme has to do with the
fact that Titus states that his parents went to college and graduated at a time
when there were no feeds, showing their “old age” compared to all the new hip
kids with feeds. The Morpheus meme ties into the destruction of the environment
that is evident in the novel such as the scene when Titus and Violet have to
don radioactive suits to go to the beach. My Office Space meme has to do with
the fact that we should most definitely not let corporations be the controllers
of the super-computers in people’s brains. This ties into the anti-consumer
spirit of the novel and Violet as a character.
I like that you created memes that really sum up the issues in the book, especially about Earth deteriorating and the characters don't care about it. I also enjoyed the Oprah meme and the "back in my day." Most individuals in the book have feeds, aside from the unlucky ones who can't afford it. The ones who do don't seem to be able to write, because they have their feeds do it for them. They have become lazy and under educated. They take everything for granted and I really think that the memes you made hit all of the issues. They are also quite funny because they are true! You summed up the book very well.
ReplyDeleteI found all of these memes hilarious and in tune with the reality of the theme of consumerism in the novel. My favorite of your collection is the Back in My Day and the My Office Space meme. I do think it's hilarious how Titus and others find it bizarre that their parents went through schooling without the feed installed in their brains; this reminds me of how we think it's bizarre that our parents went to school without all the technological advances available to us that make school "easier." As for the My Office Space meme, I agree that we should not allow corporations to control our way of thinking. It seems so obvious that implanting feeds into infants brains is not a good idea, but it is the social norm in the society of the book.
ReplyDeleteThese are all pretty great. I agree with Veronica that the "Back in my day" meme asks us to think about what equivalents of the Feed are in our lives, for example when our parents say that they took algebra without calculators or wrote essays without spellcheck, etc. Calculators and spellcheck are both considered to be a boon for our society, but have they made us slower at calculating math or spelling? What kind of evolutionary implications could these technologies have? My favorite meme is the Kermit sipping tea one because it is so prescient in our current political and environmental climate and also for Feed.
