Fighting Crime Trying to Save the World

I chose the Powerpuff Girl theme song to represent the fox fighting scene in the book because I think it has elements that can be applied to the scene. The song is about a group of sisters who fight crime together and have power over the various villains in their lives. The group of girls in the book were also fierce and successful in their fight against the villains. In addition, most of the Powerpuff Girls villains are men and the foxes turn out to be boys from the boy camp. The song’s mention of them fighting crimes, saving the world, and coming just in time implies teamwork and collaboration between the girls. They help each other during the fight showing that girls should work together. The song also emphasizes the differences between the Powerpuff Girls, and the girls fighting the foxes in the book all have their own style and are different. Just like in real life no one girl is the same as another. I also think it relates to the whole of the book’s themes/concerns because the song focuses on girl power just like this book focuses on girl power. For example, Jane says, “Now I’m not gonna lie to you girls, you’re gonna see some stuff this summer. Stuff you might not understand. It’ll be hard but you’re scouts and you’re made of tougher stuff.” The Powerpuff Girl theme song is all about tough girls. The Lumberjane pledge is another part of the book that the song relates to.

  1. Haha so true! I could not help thinking of the powerpuff girls while reading Lumberjanes. I am glad to see examples of varying female leadership styles Hopefully the spread of theses leadership styles with disseminate the unfortunately often negative reference of females being "Bossy" or "Bitches" when given roles of power. (Ps. Heidi, i'm missing class today i'll grab notes from you tomorrow!)

  2. This is so fitting! I thought of something similar as I was reading the pledge in the graphic novel.

  3. Hi Heidi,
I think this is a great choice! You didn't mention this, but I think the comic book aspect of Lumberjanes is really complimented by the cartoon aspect of the Powderpuff Girls.

  4. Hi Heidi,

Yes, I think we could probably even argue that Lumberjanes is informed and influenced by Powerpuff girls. Their model of collaborative girl power and strength in their differences certainly appears in Lumberjanes, and Lumberjanes certainly evokes the same cartoonish style and adolescent girl power vibe, so this song works quite well.
