1&2
Journals are naturally intended to have some level of privacy, at-least, until the author divulges the text.  Similarly, Jackie's stories and writings would be of a private nature;  she is an artist and her art has intimate value and she must be the one to share this value with the world.  This all said, I included the first meme with the cat because I could imagine that Jackie's heart would skip a beat if she were to lose her journal.  Additionally, I included the meme on the left which is of a person struggling to write a novel.  Jackie ultimately wants to become a writer and publish, this meme jives on the complications and frustrations associated with finishing ones work.  This theme of written words, or text, shows the power in perspective as writing seemingly refines and holds fasts to certain truths.

3&4

These two memes both reflect the feelings of racial division that extends to regional division.  The black panther movement was, argued my some, to be an aggressive approach to equality.  The counter to this movement was with Martin Luther king, who preached peace, kindness, and the lifting of hate.  The meme with Samuel Jackson is meant to reflect black panther action toward violent racism.  Jackie's father, Jack, supports the black panther movement, while Jackie's mother, Mary, does not... similarly Jack prefers the north and does not understand Mary's inclination to consistently visit the south.  The second meme (with the stick figure) is representative of Jack's view of the south, a view that holds disdain and skepticism.

The four memes focus on an overall theme of perspective.  Perspective is based on experience and personality, and it would seem unfathomable to try and collect rubrics or generalizations for any group of people.  We are all too different, in too many ways.

  1. Hi Trent,

I appreciate your exposition on each of the memes. I certainly see the relevance of the journaling/publishing memes as Jacqueline carries the same desire to record and publish as Esperanza in Mango Street. I thought it was her uncle who most clearly articulated support for the Black Panther movement. I don't recall getting that information from her father, though I could have missed a reference. A small caveat for future posts: make a post title before you post it. As is, Blogger takes the first few words of your post is you do not include a title, so this one says "Journals 1 & 2," which can be a little confusing for navigating the blog.
