I’ve chosen the poem “The Candy Lady” as my excerpt (70-71).
The song I’ve chosen to accompany the scene is (perhaps predictably) The Candy
Man by Sammy Davis Jr. In this scene, Jackie discusses a trip to the candy shop
with her grandfather, brother, and sister. They are all enthralled by the
selection in the store, a feeling embodied by the song. Other important themes
in the poem are family, inheritance, and childhood. The children’s grandmother
says too much candy will rot their teeth, but their grandfather says they’ll be
fine for they’ve inherited his strong teeth. This connection the children have
with their grandfather goes beyond just a physical trait, though. They’ve been
brought up by this man who treats them well and whom they love and call “Daddy.”
This trip to the candy store is the perfect example of a childhood activity.
The youthfulness of their relationships with each other and their grandparents,
as well as their wonder over the kinds of candy are shared by the song.
Hi Alexis,
ReplyDeleteThis song always makes me think of Rory and Dean (gross) in Gilmore Girls, but I agree that it captures the mood of those trips to the candy store with their grandfather. I'd like to see some more analysis of the lyrics. For example, which lines give you a similar impression of familial closeness or love that we also get from this scene in Brown Girl Dreaming?
