"Lumberjanes" Category B, Prompt B

Da Hae Han
“Lumberjanes” by S. Watters, G. Ellis, N. Stevenson and B. Allen
Category B, Prompt B
Meme 1: There is a constant recurring LGBT theme throughout the comic book, “Lumberjanes.” Although it may not be quite blatant, I hold onto the belief that a particular instance, which isn’t quite as subtle, is the instance in which Molly attempts to give CPR to Mal. Although it is primarily, merely a rescue attempt, it is evident, looking at Mal’s blushing expression, that it signifies more, a possible, romantic relationship.

Meme 2: Another instance, which I feel is representative of the LGBT theme present in the novel, regards the arm wrestling match April has with the talking statue they come across. While the scenario is not necessarily focused on LGBT relationships, it is emblematic of women empowerment. The male statue belittles the female character, only to be proven wrong when she defeats him, which promotes women.

  1. I love the first meme and your examination of the possible romantic undertones through such a tiny detail in illustration. I also appreciate your focus on LGBT themes in the storyline as well, nicely done!

  2. Hi Lydia,

You are right to pick up on the romantic tones in the CPR scene. While it appears to be a rescue moment, it is actually a "first kiss" as your meme conveys. Your second meme certainly captures the surprising strength of April, though it is not really an LGBT theme so much as a general feminist message that we should never assume that femininity equals weakness.
