I chose the song "Home" by Phillip Phillips for the page entitled "Ohio Behind Us" in Part II. The reason for this is that there is a real feeling of loneliness here when it is mentioned that Jackie's mother is telling them all to stop asking how long they will be away from home, and the song is saying "Settle down, it'll all be clear. Don't pay no mind to the demons, they fill you with fear... Just know you're not alone, cause I'm gonna make this place your home." There is another part that says that Robert is trying to follow Caroline to New York City and Jackie says maybe she should go there too. She seems to be trying to find herself, also what the song says is going to happen. I feel that this song could be used effectively in a movie for "Brown Girl Dreaming."
I love this song! And I think it is very applicable in the passage you chose. It's reminiscent of a folky, homey tune, which I think fits very well with Ohio and Greenville.
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI think this song works perfectly with Brown Girl Dreaming, particularly because the Woodsons do go on to make a home out of South Carolina, and later Brooklyn. The text reinforces this concept of home being something you can carry with you and embraces the possibility of having multiple homes in your heart as Jackie claims Ohio, South Carolina, and Brooklyn all as her homes. This post draws good attention to the plot developments of the text, but it would be even better to see some direct lines from her poetry that coincide with the lyrics of this song.
Thanks for the feedback! I will try to include more detail next week.
