Ms. Marvel Category B Prompt 2

The theme I focused on in choosing these memes was female identity -- more specifically how Kamala struggles to find her own. The first meme I chose reflects how she desires to be white and blonde. It doesn't matter that she has superpowers at first, she just wants to fit in. Society preaches to everyone, women especially, to "be themselves" despite the fact that the "selves" they wish people to be are laid out for them with little to no choice. This leads to the second meme I chose which is reflective of Kamala feeling uncomfortable in her new physical appearance. What was once a dream come true, turns into a nightmare as once again she struggles to grasp her identity. The third meme I chose is one that I've seen many times online about the difference between a "girly girl" and a "tomboy". Kamala seems to struggle with this too as she attempts to find a balance between femininity and masculinity. She enjoys video games but also wants to wear heels when she fights crime. However, the graphic novel seems to imply that femininity isn't what women should desire as Kamala ends up feeling uncomfortable in her costume. The final meme I chose is inaccurate in the ethnicity it speaks about, but correct in the message. Again, Kamala struggles with her identity since she is too Americanized for her family, but too Muslim for her American schoolmates. This shows a struggle to find an identity that balances different aspects -- religion and culture, femininity and masculinity, and society versus self.

Category B - Prompt B

Learning to control her powers- Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American girl who just wants to fit in and be like "the other kids." After acquiring her superhero powers, Kamala must learn to control her powers, specifically her shape shifting limbs. In order to do so, Kamala must believe in herself and be determined. While acquainting herself with her powers, Kamala truly beings to understand that it means to accept yourself. 

The truth will set you free- After discovering her new superpower, Kamala first feels alone, afraid that no one will accept her for who she is, so she hides behind the original Captain Marvel's looks. But once she reveals herself to one of her best friends, Bruno, though at first he is overcome by the shock of it, becomes her support and confidant. They begin to work together to free his brother from captivity. 

"I tell them who I am."- After some ups and downs about her identity as a superhero, Kamala comes to the realization that she does not have to look like Captain Marvel to be courageous, to be brave, to be a superhero. From this point on, Kamala steps into her own shoes as a superhero, no longer wearing the Captain Marvel disguise, but a simple mask, boots, and a burkini with tights. Simplistic style that represents her culture and her identity. She is the new Ms. Marvel!

Awesomeness galore- Now that she has come to terms with her powers and has taken on new responsibilities, Kamala begins her journey to keep the Jersey City area safe. 

Lumberjanes: Category B, Prompt B

After the girls encounter the foxes who tell them "beware the kitten holy," a lot of their energy was spent trying to figure out what it meant. Weird things keep happening to the girls throughout the book, and they are possibly linked to this "kitten holy." I thought this meme was perfect because it definitely seems that "resistance is futile" and the kitten is wreaking havoc on the camp and other nearby camps.

I thought this meme was funny because of how well it related to Jen and the camper's relationship. Friendships and leader/camper relationships are an important theme throughout the novel. There were several different versions of this meme but this one definitely best relates to Lumberjanes. While a camp counselor might seem like a fun summer job to outsiders, Jen feels like she constantly has to babysit the girls. Also, the girls feel like she is way too strict, which ties in to the "what my campers think I do" section of this meme. I think the last picture is funny because it seems as if it could be from the point of view of a counselor being surrounded by campers. This is so relatable to Lumberjanes because in the beginning the girls are always ganging up and plotting against Jen as a team. 

This meme fits the girl's poison ivy situation perfectly. It also demonstrates the idea that they are all in this together. If one of them gets into trouble, they are all going down (including Jen).

I wanted to include a meme on the Fibonacci sequence because I thought it was great that Jo knew this and was able to solve the problem. Also, this meme can relate to almost everything in the novel. Adventures are always "escalating quickly." The girls go from canoeing in the river to getting thrown around by a sea monster and the boys camp goes from serving cookies and tea to trying to attack the girls. 

Lumberjanes Category B Prompt B

I decided to make this meme because I feel like this is how Jen feels as the Lumberjanes' camp councilor.  Every time the Lumberjanes leave their cabin it seems like they find trouble.  I think if Jen could express her feelings in memes this would definitely be how she feels, which is extremely frustrated with her campers.  

I feel like this is how April was secretly feeling after the arm wrestling competition, especially after she was asked to teach arm wrestling.  Personally, I could just picture April saying this afterwards instead of "I would have to charge".

I think that the Lumberjanes have a lot of weird and bad luck when it comes to their adventures at camp.  The idea that they are going out to canoe to earn a badge only to get attacked by a river monster sums it up. I think this is exactly poor Mal's luck as well since she warns about dangerous things in the river. I think this is also fitting because later on in the book April says something along the lines of "our luck is bound to change" after the fall into the poison ivy and the boy's camp finds them.  Overall, I think the lumberjanes have a lot of similarities to Bad Luck Brian in a sense. 

I had trouble wording this meme, but I feel like the situation where the Lumberjanes fall into the poison ivy and are then helped by the boys is very fitting towards the socially awkward penguin meme.  As April was saying, it felt like in this situation that their luck was changing, but then it takes a turn for the unexpected worst.  I think this meme is fitting because it is like the Lumberjanes made one step forward and then took two steps backwards.
