Seventeenth Summer

Shae Call
1. The book was an emotional roller coaster riddled with insecurity/uncertainty associated with first-time relationships. Angie meets Jack the summer before going off to college. She is not the prettiest or most popular girl, she is still finding herself. Her insecurity makes her skeptical because Jack is still friends with his ex-girlfriend, Jane Rady(#1). I can image this meme is the look Angie had when watching them dance.***"When Jack and Jane had finished dancing I should have smiled as if I hadn't cared at all...But I didn't, my face had been stiff with misery."
2. Angie is excited that Jack has taken interest in her. They enjoy their time together and Angie thought the feeling was mutual. She is concerned when Jack doesn't always call her in a timely manner. The feeling of desperation is present throughout the book. She's eager to please him and becomes nervous when the phone doesn't ring (#2). I picture Angie trying to convince herself to stay calm because everything was fine.
***" Until this summer telephones had never been important to me, and now, always, I was waiting for it to ring."
4. This was the first time Angie had been in a relationship. Previously Jack discloses his longest relation was only three months. Angie feels the same Jack does, he can't get her out of his mind and longs to be with her any chance he can.
***This is the first time she has heard this: "I've thought about this for a long time, and I know what I'm saying and I'm in love with you Angie."
Her first thought isn't I love you too, instead, it is: "Love is such a big word." This is awkward, and the meme epitomizes this moment.
I don't think you could have chosen better memes for this book, they are hilarious! I feel like you were also able to touch on all of the major parts, Angie feeling jealous for the first time, constantly waiting for Jack to call, trying many new things, and experiencing her first (awkward) love. It's also great that you included specific quotes from the book to prove the relativity of the memes. The last meme is definitely my favorite because it fits the situation so well.
ReplyDeleteI think the first two memes you chose are perfect. In my opinion, a lot of this book was spent waiting for the phone to ring. I think the second meme of the skeletons is great and can be used to lotta not only Angie, but Lorraine as well.
ReplyDeleteHi Shae,
ReplyDeleteThese are a great selection of memes for the book. I particularly like the final two because they cast some humor on some of the uncomfortable moments in the book: when Angie allows herself to get drunk and when she doesn't say I love you back.
