Ms. Marvel twitter handle - Liren Xue

I decided to make a Twitter handle for Kamala since she is a modern teenager and I feel like everyone has a Twitter now.
For her handle, I decided to go with KamalaMarvel01. Even though this hints at her secret identity, I felt like it wasn’t a stretch for such an outspoken Marvel fangirl to include a reference in her Twitter handle. I also added the 01 because Kamala is 16 years old which counting backwards would mean that she was born in ’01 (Yikes. Also, kamalamarvel without the 01 was taken). Her introduction includes some basic descriptors and an invitation to look up her fanfiction.net page (which according to the Marvel wiki is SlothBaby)
The handle itself is designed to Kamala’s actual handle. I didn’t want to reveal that she was actually Ms. Marvel since in the story, she doesn’t tell anyone except Bruno (and that was only when she had to). Consequently, none of the tweets that I made follow that line of thinking. Rather than tweeting stuff like “Hey @tonystark, had a great time saving the world with you the other day,” I mostly tweeted stuff that pertained to Kamala’s life. I reference the beginning scene which highlights Kamala’s Muslim identity by showcasing her decision not to eat bacon, and include two memorable quotes from the comic. Also, I retweeted something from Blizzard, the company that made World of Warcraft, since Kamala is a self-proclaimed gamer.
As for the people I followed, it was comic-related pages, celebrities, and video game related pages. The comic stuff I think is pretty self-explanatory, but it’s basically just the pages of some of the heroes that Kamala likes. I followed Taylor Swift since she is the quintessential white, blonde woman that Kamala endeavors to act like at the beginning of the comic. Specifically, I got this idea from when the scene where she saves Zoe. Before saving her, Kamala thinks to herself, “As soon as Zoe shows up I feel… Uncomfortable. Like I have to be someone else. Someone cool.” I can definitely see Taylor Swift as someone that Kamala followed in the past as a sort of role model before she became more secure in her own identity. I also followed Ellen DeGeneres and Tina Fey since at one point, Bruno calls her funny. Finally, I went back and followed the page for the game Overwatch since at one point Kamala says that she is a gamer and has the thumbs to prove it, implying that she plays a console game that uses a controller. Overwatch is pretty mainstream right now so I figured she might play it.

  1. Hi Liren,

I really like your choice to hint at Kamala's double life. It does make sense that she would have it as her handle anyway since she is a super fan. The account looks really great also. I love how you put nerd in her description because eventually she does become ok with being a gamer, nerd, and etc. I think your point about Taylor Swift is good. I feel like Kamala would idolize someone that doesn't look like her at all and that makes it harder to see herself as "cool". Also I love that you followed Tina Fey and Elle DeGeneres.

  3. Hi Liren,

I have been waiting for someone to incorporate her fanfiction into her social media pages. As a writer who seems quite proud of how many upvotes her pieces get, she would definitely promote her material on her Twitter feed. I appreciate that this page stays true to Kamala rather than Ms. Marvel and honors her decision to keep her double identity secret.
