Find Ms. Marvel on Instagram: @Kamala_Khan

For this assignment, I chose to make an Instagram for Kamala. I opted to make a straightforward, simple Instagram handle (Kamala_Khan) for her because I found it to reflect current teen Instagram accounts. I have a few young nephews and I noticed they, and their friends, use their real (and full) names for online accounts, something I, and older generations, were strictly told not to do just a few years ago on the internet (especially on older websites like MySpace). I tried paying close attention to minute details in the text and current teen trends to use for these posts. For example, I included one of her favorite quotes, that her father often says, in her profile bio and mimicked the way I've noticed many teen girls describe themselves on Instagram (they often put their age, location, and a couple of emojis).

For her first post, I decided to upload a photo of hot sandwiches on a rack to reflect the first scene in the comic where Kamala and Nakia are in Circle Q with Bruno. I tried very hard to find a similar photo; I wanted it to look as realistic as possible. I had Kamala put a filter over the image, too, because I felt that was another thing a lot of people enjoy doing on Instagram.

The next image is a screenshot from an RPG called Undertale. Undertale came out in 2015 and was very popular amongst teens; it was very viral on Tumblr. Despite it being over a year old, it's still commonly played by many teenagers. I noticed in the text that Kamala said she’d played many RPGs; she said, “I’ve been playing video games and RPGs since I was a little kid. I have the thumbs to prove it.” So, I figured Undertale would have been a game Kamala would have liked to play.

The third and final image for Kamala’s Instagram is artwork of Captain Marvel. Throughout various instances in the text, Kamala often mentions how much she wishes she were tall and blonde. When she sees Captain Marvel, Kamala says, “I want to be beautiful and awesome and butt-kicking and less complicated. I want to be you.” So, I included an image of Captain Marvel and wrote, “Goalssss.” The caption is also worded in this fashion in order to reflect the common language teenagers use online when seeing something online they wish they had, want to be, want to attain, etc.

  1. I like the image of Captain Marvel and your caption of "goals" because I think it fits Kamala's personality and overall expectations for herself.

  2. I love your choice for the second photo! It fits that one scene in the comic where Kamala's face is pressed to the glass.

  3. Hi Josie,

That's an interesting observation that today's teenagers are more inclined to include their full name and location on their online platforms. This instagram feed is well curated and demonstrates thorough attention to detail. I think the deli picture is perfect. The only additional thing I would like to see from this account is which accounts Kamala would follow.
